39. Mensen met een verstandelijke beperking

Samenvatting

Er is nog geen eenduidig beeld over de precieze prevalentie van kanker bij mensen met een verstandelijke beperking, maar er zijn aanwijzingen dat deze groep problemen ondervindt op het gebied van vroege opsporing en toegang tot oncologische zorg. Het gevolg hiervan is dat mensen met een verstandelijke beperking een slechtere prognose hebben op het moment dat kanker wordt gediagnosticeerd in vergelijking met mensen zonder verstandelijke beperking. Dit vraagt om alertheid op symptomen en klachten die bij patiënten met een verstandelijke beperking anders kunnen zijn dan bij patiënten zonder verstandelijke beperking. De oncologische behandeling van patiënten met een verstandelijke beperking kan vragen om aanpassingen. In de literatuur worden voorbeelden van behandelaanpassingen beschreven, maar relevante keuzes die aan deze aanpassingen ten grondslag liggen zijn voor een groot deel nog onbekend.
