Condylomata acuminata worden veroorzaakt door de niet-oncogene humane papillomavirussen HPV-6 en HPV-11.
De belangrijkste besmettingsroute is seksueel contact.
In principe zijn condylomata acuminata zelflimiterend: 90 % verdwijnt binnen twee jaar.
Bij behandeling is podofyllotoxine de eerste keus.
